Profile

Biography
Heather Browne began her professional journey after graduating from the University of New Brunswick, initially setting her sights on psychology. Instead, she found herself teaching in Oromocto, NB—an experience she fondly considers its own kind of psychology degree.

Her passion for writing took root during her teaching years, nurtured through involvement with the Writers' Federation of New Brunswick and the Maritime Writers’ Workshop. This led her to pursue an MFA in Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia in the 1990s. From her thesis emerged two poetry collections, both published by small presses in New Brunswick.

Heather’s interest in fiction was also sparked during her time at UBC. Her short story collection, A Moose in the Dark, was published in 2017 by a respected independent press in Toronto.

Her current novel-in-progress, The Broken Tooth, began during a residency at the Kingsbrae International Residency for the Arts (KIRA) and was pitched at WFNB’s 2025 meeting.

Based in Fredericton, Heather leads the Writing Well series—small, in-person workshops held around a table with fellow writers. For details on fall and spring sessions, contact Kathryn Baird, Recreation and Culture: 506-260-0605 or kathryn.baird@fredericton.ca.
